Jordan Rabon began preaching at 8 at Union Missionary Baptist. He remembers being scolded by his mom for sitting in the pastor’s chair before he began giving sermons.

When Jordan Rabon began preaching, at age 8, he had to stand on a wooden box at the pulpit.

Watching him, his mother, Marci, breathed a sigh of relief.

“Finally,” she recalls saying. “It is finally happening. Because we’ve had to hear it, we’ve had to endure it all this time. It really was a blessing.”

Rabon had been playing preacher with his friends for years, even baptizing them in the backyard wading pool, wearing his mother’s maternity blouse as a robe and Sesame Street boots as waders.

Now 26, Rabon is still preaching, at Union Missionary Baptist Church.

Only he doesn’t need a box to stand on. He’s 6 feet 5 inches tall.

“I’ve come a long way,” he said. “Up.”
