Egypt and Saudi Arabia say they aim to boost military, economic, and social ties and pursue their common interests.

In a statement released after a meeting between President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and Saudi Defense Minister and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Thursday, el-Sissi’s office says the two leaders also will work to create a joint Arab military force.

In what they called a “Cairo Declaration,” they pledged to enhance cooperation and investments in the energy and transport sectors.

Saudi Arabia has given Egypt billions of dollars in aid since the military overthrew an Islamist president in 2013, and Egypt is currently participating in a Saudi-led air campaign against Shiite rebels in Yemen. Army commanders of Arab states are planning a joint force for interventions in regional crises.
