American Idol runner-up, La’Porsha Renae has been heavily criticized for saying she ‘doesn’t agree with the LGBT lifestyle’.

Renae spoke with reporters about her next steps regarding recording her debut album and the possibility of moving from her hometown in Mississippi to Los Angeles.

The singer said she wasn’t sure where she was going to live, but she would definitely be leaving Mississippi, prompting a reporter to ask her about the state’s controversial new ‘anti-LGBT’ law, which allows for LGBT people to be discriminated against based on the employers’ religious beliefs.

The American Idol star who lost to Trent Harmon in the series finale, responded by saying: ‘They are people just like us. They’re not animals as someone stated before.

‘They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect.

The singer said that as people ‘we should be able to coexist with one another’.

She then said: ‘I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised.

‘But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people.

‘We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on.’

Renae’s comments weren’t taken lightly as several people criticized her remarks on social media.

Many Twitter users said that being gay isn’t a lifestyle and that it’s part of who someone is.
