Rahm Emanuel Expresses Displeasure With Title of Spike Lee’s ‘Chiraq’ Movie

‘Mayor Rahm Emanuel is not happy about the working title of a film that Spike Lee is planning to set in Chicago.

Emanuel told reporters that he met with Lee on Wednesday and told the director that he didn’t like the reported title: “Chiraq.”

The title is borrowed from an ugly moniker that blends the names of Chicago and war-torn Iraq and has been laid on the city by some rappers in reference to some of the city’s violence-plagued neighborhoods. Lee told Emanuel that the movie would explore the issue of black-on-black violence and would be set in the city’s Englewood neighborhood.

The movie is reportedly being produced for online behemoth Amazon for its streaming service.

“He said that while the movie is about the neighborhood of Englewood, I was clear that I was not happy about the title,” Emanuel said. “I told him also that there are very good people that live in Englewood who are raising their family and there’s a lot of positive things that are happening in Englewood mainly driven by the people that make up Englewood.”

Emanuel said he told Lee that he believed the issue of black-on-black violence was an important one to probe.

The mayor, who won reelection earlier this month, has been dogged by persistent violence in the city during his tenure.

The city recorded its lowest homicide toll in five decades last year, but experienced a surge in murders and homicides during the first three months of 2015.

Emanuel called Lee a “great artist.” The mayor, however, did not say if he asked Lee to change the title.
