In a day and age where black men are disproportionately portrayed as criminals, absentee dads and all things negative, Kierra Sheard is celebrating her father.
In a sweet Instagram post that gave us all the feels, the singer touted the virtues of Bishop J. Drew Sheard, just ahead of his birthday.
“Would you like to know something about me?” asked the 29-year-old singer and entrepreneur. “I’m in looooooooooove with my Pop!”
The eleven60 CEO described the pastor of Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God In Christ in Detroit, MI as “generous.” She also said the COGIC General Board Member, who doubles as her pastor, is a divine tool to help her hear God.
“When God speaks to me, He often uses my daddy’s voice to speak to me audibly,” the Wayne State University graduate said, pointing to 1 Samuel 3. This biblical chapter highlights how Eli the Priest taught young Prophet Samuel how to hear and respond to the voice of God.
“I live by his teachings and I’m simply grateful for both he and my mother,” added Sheard, who will celebrate the 58th birthday of her beloved “Pop” on New Year’s Day.
The affectionate Daddy’s Girl is smitten with Bishop Sheard to be sure, but she holds equal affection for him and her GRAMMY® Award-winning mom, Karen Clark Sheard, calling the pair who co-founded Karew Records in 2009 “my best friends” who “just get it!”
America first got a window into Bishop and First Lady Sheard’s relationships with their children on the 2013 BET docu-series, “The Sheards,” which aired for one season. Their loving, yet firm approach to parenting was clearly seen—something which has earned each of the prominent Pentecostal leaders the love and respect of their offspring.
“I pray for them and I still respect them” wrote Sheard. “I still believe in honoring your mother and father.”
The preacher’s kid, who turns 30 next June let it be known, “I’m a grown woman but I’ll always be his girl.”
