TEXT: Isaiah 53:10-11; 1 Corinthians 11:28-32; Ezekiel 20:33-38
The Bible speaks of seven major judgments. We have just wrapped up a series on one of those judgments — the judgment seat of Christ or the “rewards ceremony.” That is a judgment that we all should be looking forward to. Today, we are going to turn our attention to the other six judgments, and we are going to talk about each of them briefly — three today, and, Lord willing, three next week.
1. The first judgment is the judgment of the world’s sin. Isaiah 53:8 reads, “He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.” This verse is a prophetic Old Testament passage about Jesus Christ and His role as the lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world who suffered and bled and died for our sins. That judgment, took place 2,000 years ago at the cross. As one writer put it so succinctly, “the judge was judged in our place.”
2. The second judgment is the era of self-judgment. This is another way of describing the church age. Speaking to Christians in 1 Corinthians 11:31, Paul says, “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.” As children of God, we are given time to take note of sin in our own lives, to repent, and to change — to judge ourselves so God will not have to judge us.
3. The third judgment is the judgment of Israel. The book of Ezekiel tells us about this judgment which is to take place at the end of the Tribulation. So, chronologically speaking, the judgment seat of Christ — the time where we as believers receive our rewards — occurs before this judgment, making the judgment of Israel the fourth major judgment in the Bible.
The judgments that God has set up for this world make clear the fact that we all — saved and unsaved — will face God at some point in the future. This sobering thought should inspire us to walk worthily of the rewards that Jesus Christ has to give to those who are faithful to Him.
