GRETNA, La. — Orin Grant Senior has pastored at St. Paul Baptist Church in Gretna for more than 20 years.
He’s devoted countless hours to outreach in the Westbank community. With a strong emphasis on peace in the streets.
“It’s always why? You have the question of ‘What could I have done better or more? Now I have to live the rest of my life without my son,” Grant said.
On Tuesday afternoon, his namesake Orin Grant Jr. was shot and killed in an act of gun violence just minutes away from his father’s church. It happened in Harvey in the 1400 block of Pailet Avenue.
“My son was by his girlfriend’s house. To my knowledge, he was lured out of the house. In the backyard of his girlfriend’s house. He was shot by two individuals multiple times,” Grant said.
The pastor said his son would play the drums at his church every Sunday.
The family had also celebrated Orin Jr. graduating from high school in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pastor had a message for the person who killed his son.
“I want to say to the perpetrators, violence is not the answer. The negative use of weapons is not the answer. God renders forgiveness. Find peace with God,” Grant said.
