Hours after Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw called the Uvalde police response to the Robb Elementary School shooting an “abject failure,” Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin accused the top state cop of lying about the events that took place during the May 24 massacre.

During a city council meeting Tuesday, McLaughlin alleged that McCraw has an agenda to protect state troopers and Texas Rangers so he continues to “lie, leak, or misstate information” about law enforcement’s response to the mass shooting in which 19 children and two teachers were killed. McLaughlin also accused McCraw of presenting biased information by not acknowledging that 14 DPS officers stood in the school hallway for more than an hour while the gunman went on his rampage inside two classrooms.

“Every briefing he leaves out the number of his own officers and rangers that were on scene that day,” McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin claims he and other local officials were instructed to keep quiet about law enforcement response to the shooting while investigations continue, so he was frustrated by McCraw’s testimony during a special Texas Senate committee hearing in Austin Tuesday. However, McLaughlin declared that now, “the gloves are off. As we know it, we will share it. We are not going to hold back anymore.”

Additionally, McLaughlin said he is frustrated with a lack of information from state officials. “They can go to Austin and have public deals to talk about it and different things and not share a damn thing with this city or anybody in this community, and that’s wrong,” he said. “That’s totally wrong.”
