16-year Prison Term Given to Colorado Mom for Child Abuse and Taking Advantageof the System

Psychiatrists have termed  Kelly Turner’s as similar to that of  Munchausen syndrome by proxy. It is a psychological disorder in which parents or caregivers seek attention from the illness of their children or dependents and sometimes cause the injuries themselves.

Kelly Turner is guilty of and has been charged with child abuse that led to the death of her 7-year-old daughter Olivia Gant. Turner has also been charged with taking advantage of the system and was found guilty of charitable fraud and theft.  Turner lied about her daughter’s health so she could get help from charitable organizations like Make-A-Wish Foundation. She has received anywhere from $100,000 to $1 million all together from foundations. In addition, she has lied to doctors about her daughter’s medical history.

Turner turned out many videos highlighting her little girl’s battle with disease and death. She used these to fool doctors into helping her and to tug at the hearts of individuals and foundations to send her money.

Prosecutors showed Turner mercy: Previous charges of first-degree murder, attempt to influence a public servant and forgery were dropped as part of an agreement with prosecutors.
