Inmate Runs Fraud Scheme While Behind Bars

Damon Thomas Young is already behind bars. But that did not stop him from scheming to steal millions of dollars. Prosecutors say he used a cell phone from prison to try to steal millions of dollars worth of heavy equipment.

Young who was already serving time, was sentenced to seven years in prison in connection with the theft scheme. He was convicted of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in August.

Young was already serving time for assaulting a police officer when he used a contraband cell phone in 2019 to pose as a purchasing officer for a pharmaceutical company. He said the company was building a new facility and ordered heavy equipment that he had delivered around his home in Ranger, Georgia. Prosecutors say he then put the equipment up for sale on Craigslist.

Young ordered nearly $3 million of equipment, though prosecutors say he only managed to acquire four pieces worth over $500,000. The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office has recovered those items.
