Whyte House Family Spoken Novels Holiday #35: Shaking the Gates of Hell: A Holyween Story Chapter 9

Welcome to the Whyte House Family Spoken Novels podcast: Holiday Edition episode #35. Today we are reading chapter 9 of the novel “Shaking The Gates of Hell” by Daniel Whyte III with Meriqua Whyte.

Pastor Grant decided to stop by the church on his way home from speaking with Mr. Carter. He did a prayer walk around the building asking God to protect the church family. He prayed for extra protection on Holyween night. He gave Brother Ramsey a call and left a message for him asking him to meet him at the church around 6:30 that evening. He then gave Sister Ramsey a call. She answered, and agreed to meet at the church at 6:30 also.
“I can at least try to save one marriage,” Pastor Grant said as he drove home. “But whatever the case, I will go on as planned. We cannot give the devil this victory. Lord, I thank You for the souls that have already been saved. I thank You for the souls that will be saved from our soul-winning efforts this week. And I thank You for the souls that will be saved on Holyween night. Help me to give a clear presentation of the Gospel. Please remove the cloudiness from their minds that the devil will place there, and give all who attend an understanding of just what You did for them on the cross. And, Lord, please help my wife during this time to be extra prayerful. Show her just what the devil is trying to do to our family during this time. All this I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
A tired Pastor Grant returned home a little after the lunch hour to find his wife a spiritual mess. In his eyes, not only was her attitude one of the devil, but she was looking like the devil. One of his statements to her was: Sin makes you ugly. And, right now, not only was she acting ugly, but she was looking ugly.
“I had a wonderful lunch prepared for us and you did not even have the decency to call and let me know you would not be having lunch here,” she said as he entered through the front door.
Pastor Grant stopped half way across the living room. He looked up towards the ceiling for a few seconds. “You know what? I’d rather you not meet me at the door if you’re going to come with that kind of attitude,” he said to her. “Now, what’s the problem?”
“Who said there was a problem?”
“Your attitude says there is a problem.”
“Okay then. The problem is: you could have called and let me know you’d be running late.”
“My running late and forgetting to call has never been a problem before.”
“Correction. It has been a problem, I just chose not to say anything about it. But I’ve decided to say something about it today. I can only keep the meal warm for so long. You’ve not only been late for our Monday lunch dates many times because you’ve chosen to suddenly take care of something at the last minute, but the children and I have had to eat our dinner meal too many times without you. What ever happened to ‘we do things as a family around here’?”
“Marlene, this has never been a problem before. Do you know what? I believe the devil has gotten a hold of your mind. You’re not thinking sanely. You’ve always been for me taking care of urgent church business. As I’ve shared with you before, more than once, being in the pastorate is mostly a twenty-four hour seven days a week ministry. There is no nine-to-five eight hour a day posting when one is in the ministry. I asked you before we got married were you up to the task; you said yes, so I do not want to hear this at all.”
“Well, you’re going to hear it,” his wife said following him to their bedroom. “I am tired spiritually; I’m tired mentally; I’m tired physically; and I’m tired emotionally. I cannot run with you anymore; I cannot run at the speed at which you are going. I just cannot do it anymore. And I am tired of taking a back seat. I want a divorce.”
Pastor Grant stopped in his tracks. This was the first time the word divorce had ever been mentioned by his wife. He immediately put into practice his motto that he reiterated to his children every now and then: Pray. Think. Do. He saw this for what it was. The devil was working on his wife to cause disharmony between them in an attempt to stop all the soul-winning that was going on at the church. She and the children had been faithful in participating in the church’s everyday soul-winning campaign that would last up until Friday, Holyween day.
“Marlene, let’s pray and then you go get some needed rest; I’m going to get some needed rest also. We have about two hours before we go pick the children up. I’ll pick them up today so your sleep won’t be disturbed.”
“How can you talk so nonchalantly, or even talk about sleeping at a time like this? Did you not hear what I said? I would like to get a divorce.”
“I heard you clearly. I believe the devil is working on your mind and you are having a hard time fighting him off, so let’s pray and then we’ll both just get some sleep.”
After Pastor Grant prayed with his wife, she wanted to talk more, but he told her, “I think we should discuss this after we get some rest. Neither of us is in the right frame of mind to talk about such an important subject at this time. You can have the bedroom. I’ll sleep on the couch in my office. Like I said, I’ll pick the children up.”
Pastor Grant picked up his pillows, went into his office and closed the door behind him. He stretched himself out on the couch and prayed again.
When Pastor Grant left to pick the children up at four, his wife was asleep. He decided to take them to the church so she could sleep out undisturbed. After picking up a tasty meal from Captain D’s first, he left the children inside one of the Sunday school rooms to eat while he talked with Brother and Sister Ramsey.
“You two have been a part for too long. Can’t you see what’s happening to you? The devil does not want us to go on with the hell house project. He does not want people to get a picture of the hell they are going to go to if they continue living the way they are living without Jesus Christ as head of their lives. And what better way to do this than to disrupt the lives of the people directly involved in this project?”
Pastor Grant shared with them how the devil had fired at other families of the church. “Sister Carter is talking about leaving her husband. As you already know, Brother Mitchell and his wife dropped out a couple weeks back. Sister Greene is having trouble with her teenage son. People’s cars are breaking down, and on and on I could go. Even my wife is talking crazy. I want you two to get back together. What’s taken place between you two can be forgiven. After all this is over with, the devil is going to ease the pressure he’s applying and everything is going to be peaceful and you’ll begin to ask yourself: what have I done? Why did I go through with a divorce? Now do you both really want that on your record: divorced after two years of marriage?”
“No, Pastor,” Brother and Sister Ramsey said after thinking about all Pastor Grant shared with them.
“I didn’t think you did. I want you two to go home together, make up, and come on out for Wednesday night prayer meeting and Bible study as well as on Thursday as a married couple working together for the Lord against the devil. Do something for me this week. Only say what just has to be said between you two everyday up until after the hell house event. Say ‘good-morning’ and ‘goodnight’ and ‘I love you’ to each other every day and leave it at that.”
“It’s going to be hard, Pastor, but we’ll give it a try,” the Ramseys said.
“Just think of the souls who will be saved from this. Okay?” Pastor Grant said. “I want you both to stay and go soul-winning with us this evening if you can. The devil’s going to be mad and try to get between you, but follow my advice and when you are tempted to say something negative, just pray. Okay?”
Pastor Grant prayed with them before letting them go. “By the way, Brother Ramsey, will you be able to come out on Friday? It would be good for you to see the result.”
“Yes, Pastor. I may have to leave a little early as we’ll be going into the field; but I’ll be able to make it.”

Now, dear listener, please know that God—the divine Author of all things—wants to write a great story with your life as well. But first you must give Him the pen by trusting Him with the life He gave you and surrendering your heart to Jesus Christ as Savior. Here is how:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
