Whyte House Family Spoken Novels Holiday Edition #26: The Hell House Experience

Welcome to the Whyte House Family Spoken Novels podcast: Holiday Edition episode #26. Today we are reading the book “The HELL HOUSE Experience: Inspired by a True Story” by Danita Evangeline White.

“Oh, this is going to be good!” Menzie St. John said as she and her parents drove home from the church meeting. Her church, Gospel Light Bible Baptist Church, was putting on the Hell House Experience, an alternative to the celebration of Halloween. The marquee in front of the church read:

Come join us for
Holy-ween, the true
Hell House Experience

“I’m glad you think so,” her dad said. “As Pastor White says, ‘We have to take it to the devil.’ You know a lot of people do not fully understand where the celebration of Halloween came from and the satanic activities behind it. They allow their children to take part in it not realizing they are supporting the work of the devil and his demons.”

“Dad, I hear a lot of children have been hurt on Halloween night,” Menzie said.

“Yes, that’s true, but parents still let their children go trick-or-treating,” her dad said.

“Can you tell me again the true meaning behind Halloween?” Menzie asked.

“Sure,” Mr. St. John said as they pulled to a stop at the stoplight before turning into the Walmart parking lot. It was the family’s tradition to end each Wednesday with buttered popcorn topped with a variety of trail mix, plump raisins, yogurt covered raisins, nuts, honey, or nutritional yeast. Menzie and her mom went inside the store to pick the items up. Mr. St. John gave them a brief history of Halloween on their twenty-four minute ride home. Menzie already had a list of people she would invite to the Hell House alternative. Her neighbour, Makala, was first on the list.

Menzie had always had a burden for Makala ever since she met her. She had moved in just three months ago. Menzie and Makala played together and talked together. They even went to the same school. On several occasions, Menzie spoke with Makala about accepting Jesus Christ as her Saviour, but she always refused. She always had an excuse with her number one excuse being “I’m just not ready.”

When Mrs. Thomas announced in church on Sunday that they were going to have a “Hell House” on Halloween night, and that they could invite anyone they wanted, there was excitement in the air.

“We want to invite as many people as we can, young and old,” Pastor White said. “We especially want to invite those who are not saved in hopes that our Hell House alternative will give them a true picture of the real hell, and this would lead them to accept Jesus as their Saviour.” Menzie could not wait to invite Makala.

“Sure, Menzie, I’ll come. It will beat dressing up like a kid and going door-to-door saying ‘Trick or Treat,’” Makala said with a chuckle.

“Don’t worry. We’ll have lots of candy and other good things to eat plus games galore,” Menzie added. “You’ve been to our church before. You’re not going to believe the transformation once you enter the building.”

Menzie and her family, along with others from the church, spent hours each evening for the next three days passing out fliers inviting people in the community to the event.

The following Tuesday, Menzie’s family and Makala drove to the church. They went to the Fellowship Hall. It was bright and cheery and everyone was talking. There were a lot of people there. It was 6:30 p.m. and the “Hell House” would start at 7:00 p.m..

At 7:00 everyone lined up at the church doors. Makala was behind Menzie. Menzie had prayed earlier that Makala would accept Jesus Christ as her Saviour. She had even asked Makala if she would, on the way to the church, but, as usual, she refused. Menzie explained to her that the “Hell House” would be like the real Hell.

“I don’t care,” Makala said. “That’s what makes it so much fun—its scariness.”

Menzie sighed and they entered the Hell House. They were part of the first group to enter. Even though she had helped with the planning and setting up of the rooms, Menzie did not quite know what to expect. In fact, the walk through their Hell House was quite different from what she had imagined.

Menzie and Makala and others in their group were in for an experience of a lifetime. Nothing could prepare them for what was ahead. Once they stepped over the threshold, they were on the road of no return. The first room was nothing like Menzie had seen just the day before.

It was pitch black and steaming hot. They were sweating already. No one could go back out because the doors were locked. Fire was creeping up along the walls. It was fake, but it looked so real. Black paste from the floor was oozing on to the bottom of their tennis shoes. Red and orange lights were flashing; from where, they couldn’t tell. There were eerie sounds and witchy laughs and even loud thumpings and yells. Demons, witches, and goblins jumped out at them.

The kids were scared. Everything looked so real and nearly everyone was screaming. When she wasn’t screaming, Makala was crying as she realized she was getting a taste of a real place called Hell—and to think the real place was going to be a hundred times worse.

Then, out of nowhere, a man dressed up as the devil jumped out at them. They screamed and yelled. He had a sharp pitch fork in one hand and a bunch of worms in the other. He stretched out his hand. He had an evil laugh. He sprinkled all the worms on the kids as they tried to dash away.

A worm landed on Makala’s shoulder. Screaming, she quickly brushed it away. Grabbing on to Menzie’s shirt, she started crying again. Menzie spun around thinking it was a demon or something. Even though she knew it was not real, she could not help feeling a little scared herself.

Makala told Menzie she did not want to go to hell and that she did want to accept Jesus Christ as her Saviour, and also, that she was sorry for all the bad things that she had done. Menzie was crying too.

After what seemed like an eternity, Menzie, Makala and their group exited the Hell House. “The only difference is,” Menzie said to Makala as they clung to each other waiting to be escorted to the church auditorium, “there is no exit in the real hell; you’ll be there for ever and ever. But, don’t worry. Let’s head over to the auditorium and Pastor White will show us the way to Heaven.”

Pastor White greeted them.

In the auditorium, Pastor White must have presented the Gospel and shared John 3:16 about ten times that night to the various groups as each exited the Hell House. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

He also shared Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall
be saved.”

Makala walked down to the front and Menzie went with her. Makala believed in Jesus Christ and she prayed the sinner’s prayer. Menzie could hardly keep back the tears. After all this time of praying and asking Makala to accept Jesus Christ as her Saviour, she finally did!
Menzie was so very happy. She gave Makala a big hug. Makala was smiling again.

The radio played “He Saved Me,” and Menzie and Makala sang along. Hundreds came to know Jesus Christ that night.

On the way home Menzie thought of all the bad things that could have happened to Makala if she had not invited her to the “Hell House” at Gospel Light. She was glad she had shared the light of Jesus Christ and vowed to keep sharing the light of Jesus Christ with everyone she met.

Now, dear listener, please know that God—the divine Author of all things—wants to write a great story with your life as well. But first you must give Him the pen by trusting Him with the life He gave you and surrendering your heart to Jesus Christ as Savior. Here is how:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”
