Inside the Mind of Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs and the Instincts that Make him so Elite

Trevon Diggs’ assignment was clear.

On third-and-5 Sunday, late in the third quarter, the Cowboys cornerback was in Cover 2, responsible for covering a deep half of the field. The playbook tells him to follow Carolina Panthers wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., who streaked into Diggs’ zone in threat of a 55-yard touchdown.

His instincts told him differently.

Diggs loitered about 12 yards from the line of scrimmage — allowing Marshall to run free 10 yards behind him — and jumped an intermediate crossing route instead.
