Welcome to The Reasons to Believe podcast, episode #217. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.
Our Reasons to Believe Scripture Passage for today is Psalm 119:105. It reads, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from A.W. Pink. He said, “We discover a striking proof of the Divine inspiration of the Scriptures. In the Bible human nature is painted in its true colors: the characters of its heroes are faithfully depicted, the sins of its most prominent personages are frankly recorded. It is human to err, but it is also human to conceal the blemishes of those we admire. Had the Bible been a human production, had it been written by uninspired historians, the defects of its leading characters would have been ignored, or if recorded at all, an attempt at extenuation would have been made.”
Today we are continuing the topic of scripture, its inerrancy, infallibility and inspiration using “Our God-breathed Book: The Bible – The Verbally Inspired, Eternal, Inerrant Word of God” by John R. Rice. Our Reasons to Believe powerpoint today comes from Chapter 3: “The Bible Claims To Be The Inspired Word of God” Part 10.
III. THE BIBLE HAS CLAIMS FOR ITS PERFECTIONS AND PERMANENCE WHICH ONLY A GOD-GIVEN BOOK COULD HAVE
1. A Striking Statement About the Indestructible Word Is in Isaiah 40:6-8
“The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
All flesh is grass. Man is fallible, impermanent and limited, and so all human sources wither, “but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” That is quoted in 1 Peter 1:23-25, which says:
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”
What kind of a word? An incorruptible word “which liveth and abideth for ever…the word of the Lord endureth for ever.” That is far beyond any human goodness.
2. Jesus Emphatically Taught the Eternal, Perfect Quality of Scripture
Elsewhere we will discuss more thoroughly the attitude of Jesus toward the Scripture. Here we simply mention that He continually upheld it as the perfect and eternal Word of God.
In the Olivet discourse Jesus said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away”.
Jesus said that not one jot nor tittle of the law should pass away till all be fulfilled.
The Lord Jesus said, “The scripture cannot be broken”.
In Luke 9:26 and Mark 8:38 Jesus said, “For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.”
Surely this gives a dignity and authority and permanence to the Scriptures which could not be true of any human, fallible man. And we must remember that the attitude of Jesus Christ here expressed in the Scripture is the way the Scripture views itself all the way through.
Some Bibles print the words of Christ in red, but that is misleading. All the words of the Bible are the words of Christ. The Holy Spirit who moves the writing prophets is “the Spirit of Christ”. He gave the Scripture.
And so Paul could be inspired to write, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly”. Jesus identified Himself with the Word of God likewise in Luke 9:26 and the companion passage in Mark 8:38. He said, “For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.” But this is giving a dignity and authority, a permanence, to the Word of God which could not be true of any human words or book.
Lord willing, we will continue this topic in our next episode.
Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Until next time, my friend, please keep in mind these reasons to believe. God bless!
