Texas Republican Lawmakers’ Voting Restriction Bill Advances Toward House Vote

Both Democrats and Republicans voiced their opinion on an election bill that will place new voting restrictions on Texans even as the bill heads toward a House vote. Protestors on the outside of the Texas House held signs echoing their chants: “suppress the virus not the vote.”

New restrictions include regulations for the disabled, regulations for those who face language barrier, new criminal penalties, among other crackdowns.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s tweet claiming to make “election integrity an emergency item this session” was rebutted by Democratic state Rep. Jessica Gonzalez who says “It is old Jim Crow dressed up in what our colleagues are calling election integrity.”

The bill’s author, Republican state Rep. Briscoe Cain, was questioned over the intent of the bill, whether he himself understood what the language in his own legislation meant. Democrats concluded Cain was unsure of himself during the questioning.

Texas voting laws are among the strictest in the United States.
