G. Balachandran who resides in New Dehli, India, celebrated his 80th birthday. Because of the surge of the coronavirus pandemic he had to settle for a ‘Happy Birthday’ congratulatory phone call from his niece Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff.
For Harris the crisis in India is also personal: Her mother was born there. As a child, Harris used to visit India every other year. Now all that remains of her extended family there are her aunt and uncle. Another Indian-born aunt lives in Canada. And G. Balachandran, Harris’ uncle, doesn’t fault his niece for how the U.S. response to India has played out and wishes they could all be together.
