Tennessee House Passes Bill to Make Dolly Parton’s Version of “Amazing Grace” Official State Song

A push from Tennessee lawmakers to make the song “Amazing Grace” as sung by Dolly Parton to be an official state song passed the House on Monday.

Rep. Mike Sparks (R-Smynra) and Sen. Raumesh Akbari (D-Memphis) introduced HB 0938/SB 1416 in February, which would make the hymn written by John Newton in the 1760s and sung by Dolly Parton as an official state song.

The bill passed 91-1 on Monday.

“Amazing Grace” has since been recorded by several stars with Tennessee ties, including Parton, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, the Oak Ridge Boys, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks.

The bill seeks to formally recognize “Amazing Grace” as a state song in Tennessee.
