KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A Kalamazoo pastor charged with 11 felony counts of criminal sexual conduct and human trafficking of teenage boys was a Kalamazoo Public Schools employee during the time police said he sexually abused a teenage boy.

According to a Freedom of Information request filed by Newschannel 3, Sticjavvar “Strick” Strickland worked for Kalamazoo Public Schools from 2013-2015 as paraprofessional at the district’s alternative middle school. Jazmonique Strickland was a paraprofessional at Phoenix High School in Kalamazoo until she resigned in September 2018.

Strickland, 39, faces 11 felony charges, including two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct on a student. Court documents outline incidents that happened between 2015 and 2018 and involved four victims, including two students, ages 15-18.

Detectives said in court documents Sticjavvar Strickland and his wife, Jazmonique Strickland, used their employment at Phoenix High School and to some extent his work as a pastor to recruit and then pay male teens for sexual encounters in the couple’s home.

Strickland resigned from Kalamazoo Public Schools in October 2015, two months after court documents claim he was charged with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old and trafficking minor.

Detectives claim between Aug. 1, 2015 and Nov. 5, 2015, Strickland asked victim number one, a 15-year-old boy, to have sex with his wife for $200. Detectives said the teen told them this type of incident happened on other occasions. Strickland was charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct and human trafficking a minor for commercial sex for the encounter.

Investigators said Strickland met two of the other victims through Jazmonique’s office job at Phoenix Alternative High School. Detectives said victim number two attended Phoenix High School during the 2017-18 school year when he was introduced to Jazmonique and Strick Strickland, who was a mentor to the victim’s friend. Detectives said after the victim met the couple, Stick paid the victim $50 to send naked photos to his cell phone. On another occasion, Sticjavvar paid the teen $100 to have sex with this wife while Strickland watched, court records said.

Victim number three, identified in court records as a Phoenix High School student, also met the couple during the 2017-2018 and performed sex acts for Strickland and his wife.

The allegations first surfaced in the August 2018 when Michigan State Police said a complainant walked in and filed a report. Troopers raided the Strickland home on Prairie Avenue in Sept. 6, 2018. A day before the raid on Sept. 5, 2018, Jazmonique Strickland submitted a letter of resignation at Phoenix Alternative High School.

In Strickland’s resignation letter to Kalamazoo Public Schools, dated Oct. 7, 2015, Strickland named seven students who he hoped to mentor going forward.

Documents did not indicate why Strickland submitted his resignation letter to Kalamazoo Pubic Schools.

“As we stated in February 2019, we trust law enforcement and the prosecuting attorney to resolve the matter appropriately. Kalamazoo Public Schools fully cooperated during their investigations,” Kalamazoo Public Schools spokesperson Susan Coney said in a statement.
