Welcome to The Reasons to Believe podcast, episode #190. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.
Our Reasons to Believe Scripture Passage for today is Romans 1:16. It reads, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from David McKenna. He said, “Christians need no other reason to be avid readers [and believers] of the Word of God. Realizing that Scripture is “God-breathed” is motivation enough. Immediately, we see a connection between the living Word and the written Word. Just as Jesus Christ the living Word is an ever present and dynamic reality, the written Word is equally alive and active through the mind of the Holy Spirit. Every time we open the Scriptures, we should expect a personal encounter with the God-breathed Spirit of the living Word. This is reading at its very best. When the mind and spirit of a biblical author interact in vibrant dialogue with the mind and spirit of a reader, the highest purpose of the inspired Word is fulfilled. We should soar every time we read the Word of God.”
Today we are continuing the topic of scripture, its infallibility and interpretation using “Our God-breathed Book: The Bible – The Verbally Inspired, Eternal, Inerrant Word of God” by John R. Rice. Our Reasons to Believe powerpoint today comes from Chapter 1: “Inspiration: Holy Ground: Pull Off Your Shoes!” Part 4.
3. We Have Seen the Miraculous Power of God’s Word
So we do not come with an unbiased mind about the Bible. When we consider the inspiration of the Bible, we come after fifty-nine years knowing Jesus Christ as our own personal Saviour and God as our Father. We come after preaching the Word and studying it for forty-seven years of public ministry. We have written comments on every chapter in the Bible and on every principal verse. We have acted on faith in God’s promises in matters where all logic would expect utter ruin. But the God of the Bible has abundantly cared for us, has educated our family, provided our needs, put millions of dollars through our hands to get out the Gospel in many millions of copies of my books and pamphlets and on hundreds of radio stations and in marvelous citywide revivals, and for thirty-four years in a Christian magazine.
We have seen tens of thousands of sinners transformed by the Gospel of this Bible. Thousands of the most abandoned sinners have claimed the Christ proclaimed here. Oh, how many drunkards we have seen made sober, how many harlots made pure, how many infidels made into humble believers through the Word of God, as we preached it! We have seen the Gospel work the same among skid row bums, among murderers in prison, among false cultists of every kind. We have seen it work wonders in Japan, in Korea, India and Palestine, when Moslems and Druses, Parsees, Buddhists, Hindus, Catholics, and Jews turned to Christ and were transformed. So it is not with a blank mind, not with unformed opinions that we approach the study of the inspiration of the Bible.
Oh, then, “Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.”
Dr. Arthur T. Pierson gives many strong, intelligent evidences, “infallible proofs,” of the inspiration of the Scriptures and urges Christians to be students of these evidences. But he says:
It is true that many an ignorant disciple has been both firm in faith and rich in service. But even he has studied one kind of evidences, and it is his knowledge of them that makes him strong. The evidences he has mastered are those which are understood by experience rather than argument. God has made it possible for even the most unlearned to know that the Bible is His Word, by finding it the power of God to their salvation and sanctification. There are simple-minded believers who know nothing of the proofs from prophecy and miracle, who do know that God is faithful to His promises, and see the miracle of the new heart and changed life actually wrought in themselves. Christ is a living Saviour by that most infallible proof — what He has done and is doing for them. He opened their blind eyes to see their sin and need, and His beauty and love; He cleansed the leprosy of their guilt, cured the palsy of their helplessness and the fever of their raging passion, and cast out the demon from their hearts.
Jerry McAuley, at whose burial thousands sadly gathered, had, in his own conversion, as great an evidence of Christianity as though Christ’s word had raised him from the dead! What less than the power of God could in a moment recover such a man from a life conspicuous for every crime, and not only set him free from the chains of his vices but make him an apostle of grace to rescue other perishing souls!
Yes, we rejoice in those overwhelming evidences of experience.
Lord willing, we will continue looking at this topic in our next episode.
Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Until next time, my friend, please keep in mind these reasons to believe. God bless!
