Nick Sherman Edwards Jr., 59, of Detroit wore many hats: pastor, principal, administrator, mentor.

The third child born to the late Nick Sherman Edwards Sr. and Regina Rose, he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. As a young boy he fervently prayed in the basement of the family home, and maintained that practice throughout his ministry.

He died May 6 due to COVID-19 complications at Sinai Grace Hospital.

Edwards was called to the ministry at age 15, and was ultimately ordained an Elder in the Church of God in Christ by the late Bishop John Seth Bailey.

He graduated from Central High School in Detroit, and went on to receive a Master’s degree from Marygrove College. He also attended William Tyndall Bible College, and received special training in School Reform from Harvard University.

Edwards was an educator for more than 20 years and for three years served as administrator for New Testament Christian Academy — a K-8 Christian school founded by his father and mentor.

Edwards founded, developed and served in several educational and ministry programs for church and schools, where he built relationships with everyone he encountered as he helped uplift people in shelters, youth outreach programs, mentoring and more.
