THERE IS MORE SAID IN THE PODCAST AUDIO THAN IN THE NOTES BELOW
TEXT: 1 Peter 4:7
7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
J.C. Ryle said, “Let me entreat all right-hearted readers to look onward and forward to the day of Christ’s second coming. A time draws near when Satan shall be bound, and Christ’s saints shall be changed –when sin shall no more vex us, and the sight of sinners shall no more sadden our minds–when believers shall at length attend on God without distraction, and love Him with a perfect heart. For that day let us wait, and watch, and pray. It cannot be very far off. The night is far spent. The day is at hand. Surely if our hearts are right, we ought often to cry, “Come quickly–come Lord Jesus!””
In our last messages, we looked at how the end of all things is drawing near and how we need to live with a sense of divine urgency in light of the imminent return of the Lord. We are to live and work with a continual prayerful watch for the second coming.
Second, we are to be sober in these last days. To be sober is to have a clear and sound mind, unclouded by deceptions. This is not the only time that Peter exhorts believers to be sober. In the very next chapter, he says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” Unfortunately, there are too many Christians who are not sober minded because they are caught up in the world. They are caught up in some political drama or celebrity scandal on social media. They are caught up binging TV shows. They are too preoccupied with games, movies, or even books, to get their spiritual life in order. The constant distractions of entertainment lead to a clouded mind. When someone is intoxicated on liquor or high on drugs, they are not sober. They are out of touch with reality. When we do not focus on the word of God and prayer, we become out of touch with the spiritual reality and the spiritual truths of God. J. Paul Duncan said, “The word translated sober means ‘having a sound mind, thinking about and evaluating situations maturely and correctly’. Being sober-minded means having a clear head so you can accurately think about your daily situations. God does not want you to live in a state of crazy. God wants you to engage the needs around you according to insight not according to what’s on fire. If a firefighter is out of control because of all the excitement or if he’s drunk, he can make things worse by accidently adding more fuel to the fire. If you and I do not live life with self-control, chances are we’ll add more fuel to the fire. The obvious question is “How do I become self-controlled and sober-minded?” Now the answer is simple, but it’s not always easy. Reject the plethora of ways the world wants to shape your thinking and read your Bible, committing to change the way you think to match the truth. As your mind is transformed by the word, as you think more like Jesus, you will be better equipped to evaluate the situation correctly. Hebrews 5:14 talks about those Christians who dig deeply into the word and feed on the meaty truths found there. Those people have their “powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good and evil.” They are self-controlled and sober minded. Those people think about and evaluate the situations of life correctly. Those people pray really well. The way you think about a situation affects the way you will pray about that situation. We must be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of our prayers.” In an environment inundated with things that distract us from God’s way, we must maintain a sober mind and align our will with God’s will. And how are we to maintain a sober mind? By always watching and praying in anticipation of our Lord’s return.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life.
