PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #520: Obadiah 19-20 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #520, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Obadiah 19-20.

19 And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

20 And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

That was Obadiah 19-20. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

Here Obadiah described some of the territories to be restored to God’s people. People in the southern desert portion of Israel (the Negev) will inherit Edom. This will fulfill the prophecies in Numbers 24:18, Isaiah 11:14, and Amos 9:11–12. Israelites in the western foothills will move south to the land of the Philistines with its coastal plains. Central Israel (Ephraim and Samaria) will be claimed, and small Benjamin will extend its borders to Gilead, east of the Jordan. Exiles sold into captivity will return and possess the land as far north as Za-re-phath. Others exiled from Jerusalem to Se-pha-rad, will possess the Negev. Suggestions on the location of Se-pha-rad include two countries (Spain, Media) and two cities (He-spe-ri-des in Libya, and Sar-dis in Asia Minor). Sar-dis seems preferable. It may be the same as the Ak-ka-di-an Sa-par-du. If Se-pha-rad is to be identified with Sar-dis, then Jews there will be returning a distance of almost 400 miles to the Negev. At the beginning of the Millennium Israelites will return to their land from these and other lands, and their territory will be expanded.
