PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #515: Obadiah 11-12 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #515, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Obadiah 11-12.

11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

________

That was Obadiah 11-12. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

In verses 11–14 the phrases on the day and in the day occur 8 times (10 times in Hebrew). When foreign forces went against Judah, they cast lots to see who would plunder which parts of Jerusalem. Edom, because of her indifference (she stood aloof) was no different from the strangers who went against her own relatives. Then in a downward spiral, the indifference was followed by (a) gloating or looking down over the misfortune of her brother, (b) rejoicing over Judah’s destruction, and even (c) boasting of her trouble. “Boast” is literally, “make your mouth large,” talking big, another expression of arrogance.
