MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports that Marte’s wife was in the hospital awaiting surgery for a broken ankle when she died earlier in the day.
Marte, 31, spent the first eight seasons of his MLB career with the Pittsburgh Pirates — winning two Gold Gloves and making the NL All-Star team in 2016.
He was traded January 27 to the Diamondbacks for minor leaguers Brennan Malone and Liover Peguero.
