This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #462, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.
Today we are reading Amos 5:23-24.
23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.
24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
________
That was Amos 5:23-24. Now here is the sense of it.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:
In verses 23–24 the verbs “away” and “let roll” are singular, whereas in verses 21–22 the pronouns “your” and “you” are plural. This indicates a shift from national accusation to individual invitation. God appealed to individuals to take away the burdensome noise of their praise songs. He would not listen to the accompanying music of their harps. Having shut His nostrils, He would also stop His ears. Instead of ritual and performance, God wanted a relentless commitment to justice and righteousness. He wanted a passionate concern for the rights of the poor, a concern that would roll on like an ever-flowing river like a never-failing stream that did not run dry. God wanted a day-to-day life of surging integrity and goodness. Only this outer evidence of inner righteousness could offer the Israelites the possibility of survival in the day of the Lord.
