PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #449: Amos 5:2 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #449, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Amos 5:2.

2 The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

That was Amos 5:2. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

Virgin Israel had fallen. This nation which had considered itself in the full bloom of youthful vigor had been cut off before her time in violent death. “Fallen” in funeral songs means “fallen by the sword”. She had died in battle in her own land. Her corpse lay unattended, deserted by God Himself. The word “deserted” was often used of God’s abandoning or forsaking His people. There was no one to lift her up, no one to restore her to life. Since the God who could help had Himself abandoned her, Israel had fallen, never to rise again.
