Grace Millane, of Wickford, Essex, went on a date with the 27-year-old on December 1, 2018 while in New Zealand, and was killed either that night or in the early hours of the next morning. Her body was later found buried in a shallow grave in a forested area outside Auckland. The 27-year-old was found guilty at Auckland High Court in November. Today, her mother Gillian Millane, appeared in court via video link, and read an emotional victim impact statement, saying her daughter ‘was my friend, my very best friend’ and that the murderer had ‘taken my daughter’s future’. Recalling when her daughter disappeared she said that not knowing where she was left her in ‘agonising pain’. Speaking directly to her daughter’s killer, who stood in the dock wearing a dark suit with his hands clasped, she said: ‘The terror and pain she must have experienced at your hands, as a mother I would have done anything to change places with her. She died terrified and alone in a room with you.’
