This is Daniel Whyte III with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #395, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.
Today we are reading Joel 3:18.
18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
That was Joel 3:18. Now here is the sense of it.
The Matthew Henry Commentary reads:
There shall be abundant Divine influences, and the gospel will spread speedily into the remotest corners of the earth. These events are predicted under significant emblems; there is a day coming, when every thing amiss shall be amended. The fountain of this plenty is in the house of God, whence the streams take rise. Christ is this Fountain; his sufferings, merit, and grace, cleanse, refresh, and make fruitful. Gospel grace, flowing from Christ, shall reach to the Gentile world, to the most remote regions, and make them abound in fruits of righteousness; and from the house of the Lord above, from his heavenly temple, flows all the good we daily taste, and hope to enjoy eternally.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:
At that time (in that day, when Messiah will reign over His people in the Millennium) the land will be a virtual paradise, enabling the Lord’s people to enjoy His agricultural blessings to the fullest. The grape harvest will be so bountiful that wine will seemingly drip from the mountains. Milk will be just as plentiful. It too was a sign of prosperity; Canaan was described as a land “flowing with milk and honey”. The seasonal streams (ravines, or wadis) will no longer run dry. This abundance of wine, milk (implying the existence of extensive herds), and water represents a complete reversal of the effects of the locust plague. A fountain will flow out of the. Lord‘s house, the Jerusalem temple. Similar imagery is employed in Ezekiel 47:1–12 and Zechariah 14:8. This fountain (and the stream it produces) will be a tangible reminder that the Lord is the Source of the land’s fertility. The valley of acacias is probably that portion of the Kidron Valley which runs through the arid wilderness to the Dead Sea.
