The United Nations is calling for an investigation after an analysis found that Jeff Bezos’ phone was hacked from an account belonging to Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Investigators with the U.N. said the findings warranted an “immediate investigation … of the continuous, multi-year, direct and personal involvement of the Crown Prince in efforts to target perceived opponents,” the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said.
“The information we have received suggests the possible involvement of the Crown Prince in surveillance of Mr. Bezos, in an effort to influence, if not silence, The Washington Post’s reporting on Saudi Arabia,” the analysts stated.
A forensic analysis concluded with “medium to high confidence” that the Amazon founder’s phone was accessed in May 2018 after he received a video from a WhatsApp account reportedly belonging to the crown prince.
Within hours of receiving the video, a “massive and unprecedented exfiltration of data from the phone began … [and] continued undetected over some months,” the report said.
