At least two Honolulu police officers were killed and another was wounded on Sunday when a man being evicted from his home opened fire on authorities after they received reports he had stabbed his landlady.
The suspect is then alleged to have set fire to his home. The blaze then spread to other neighboring houses. Four homes were badly damaged by fire, according to authorities.
Police sources told Hawaii News Now that the suspect, who has been identified locally as 69-year-old Jerry Hanel, is believed to have died in the flames.
Hanel reportedly had a history of violent behavior and making false reports to 911.
Hanel is believed to have fatally shot two officers and wounded a third after his landlady tried to evict him from a home on Hibiscus Drive.
Police were called to the scene after Hanel stabbed his landlady during the attempted eviction.
Hanel then engaged the officers with his weapon, according to HNN.
Moments later, he set fire to the home. The fire then spread to neighboring houses.
One female officer was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in extremely critical condition and later died.
