PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #376: Joel 2:14 (with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #376, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Joel 2:14.

14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?

________

That was Joel 2:14. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

The words who knows testify to the Lord’s sovereignty in the matter. Even if sinful Israel repented, she could not presume on God’s mercy as if it were something under their control which He had to grant automatically. They could only hope that He would turn and have pity by averting the disaster and restoring their crops. Agricultural blessing would mark a reversal of the curse that had come on them (in the form of the locusts) and would make it possible for grain and drink offerings to be presented again.
