TEXT: Luke 2:22-32
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Derek Geldart said, “Simeon had devoted his life to “the expectation of the Messianic salvation” and now that the promise the Spirit had made to him had been fulfilled he could depart in peace and even die that very day for “there was nothing more for him to desire upon earth.” Likewise, since we are “justified by grace by faith, we have peace with God; we have joy and peace in believing; and, as we live in peace, we shall also die in peace.” When the meeting place of the divine and the human is within a submissive heart that only desires to faithfully obey God, one does not fear death or see it as a cessation of one’s calling but instead sees it as a joyful stepping stone to be eternally in His presence and an invitation to “do yet higher and more perfect work in the nearer presence of our Master!” The best way to meet Jesus not just at Christmas but every day of the year is to make Him the sovereign ruler of one’s heart’s desires and the only thing that truly matters.”
Shortly after the birth of Jesus, Joseph and Mary traveled to Jerusalem to present their first-born Son to the Lord. According to Leviticus 12, the length of the days of purification after a woman gives birth to a son is one week. So about one week after the Nativity, the Baby Jesus was taken up to the Temple. In the temple, they were met by a man named Simeon, who prayed over the Baby Jesus. Here are three things we can learn from Simeon and his prayer.
On Christmas we saw that Simeon prayed in a spirit of righteousness. The Bible tells us that Simeon was a just and devout man – he treated his fellow men justly, and worshipped God devoutly. When we have repented of sin and aligned our hearts with God, we will be more effective in our prayer life. Like Simeon, we will ask of God the things He wants us to have, and we will be blessed according to His will.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life.
