Dallas Police officer Joseph M. George died on Christmas Eve after injuries he sustained from an off-duty car accident Sunday, officials said.

Police officials have said George was driving at a high speed before his vehicle crashed into a tree near White Rock Lake. On Thursday, police officials were still looking for a white Suzuki coupe they believe was racing with the officer’s black 2015 Ford Mustang on Sunday.

In a statement on Thursday, the department said it “wishes to express its deepest condolences to the family of Officer Joseph Michael George.”

George was a four-year veteran of the department. He worked at the Northeast patrol division, about two miles from the accident. Funeral services are pending.

Officers were called on Sunday to the 7200 block of East Mockingbird Lane at about 1:45 p.m. The off-duty officer was taken to Baylor University Medical Center.
