PODCAST: The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #358: Joel 1:5-7 (with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #358, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Joel 1:5-7.

5 Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

6 For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.

7 He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.

That was Joel 1:5-7. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

Utilizing the form of a call to mourning, the prophet elaborated on the horrifying details and effects of the locust plague. This section contains four units, each of which includes a call proper followed by the reasons for sorrow. The personified land (or city) as well as some of the groups most severely affected by the plague (drunkards, farmers, priests) were addressed. Drunkards were told to weep and wail because no wine would be available due to the destruction of the vineyards. Like a mighty nation an innumerable swarm of locusts had invaded the prophet’s land. Their ability to devour was like that of a lion, which can rip and tear almost anything with its powerful teeth (likened to fangs). The locusts had destroyed the vines and stripped even the bark from the fig trees leaving their branches white..
