PODCAST: The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #354: Hosea 14:9 (with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #354, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Hosea 14:9.

9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

________

That was Hosea 14:9. Now here is the sense of it.

The Matthew Henry Commentary reads:

Who profit by the truths the prophet delivered? Such as set themselves to understand and know these things. The ways of God’s providence towards us are right; all is well done. Christ is a Foundation Stone to some, to others a Stone of stumbling, and a Rock of offence. That which was ordained to life, becomes, through their abuse of it, death to them. The same sun softens wax and hardens clay. But those transgressors certainly have the most dangerous, fatal falls, who fall in the ways of God, who split on the Rock of Ages, and suck poison out of the Balm of Gilead. Let sinners in Zion fear this. May we learn to walk in the right ways of God, as his righteous servants, and may none of us be disobedient and unbelieving, and stumble at the word.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

The book ends with a word on wisdom. One who is wise and discerning will learn a threefold lesson from Hosea’s message. The ways of the Lord (His covenantal demands) are right. The righteous walk in them and experience the blessings of loyalty. The rebellious stumble over (not in) them in the sense that destruction (stumbling) is the direct result of disobedience. The broken commandments become the ultimate reason for their downfall. May all who read Hosea’s words walk, not stumble!
