PODCAST: The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #349: Hosea 13:15-16 (with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #349, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Hosea 13:15-16.

15 Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.

16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

That was Hosea 13:15-16. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

With the Lord’s compassion removed, Israel’s prosperity would come to an end. The Lord would come like a hot east wind which dries up everything in its path. The reality behind the figure is the Assyrian invasion, as the references to plundering and military atrocities make clear. Thus 13:15–16 correspond to the plagues and destruction of death mentioned in verse 14. The language is that of covenant curse . Again destruction would come, God said, because Israel had rebelled against Him.
