The Wichita Police Department Thursday evening arrested 18-year-old Malick Garrett, of Wichita, for second-degree murder in Wednesday night’s shooting at McAdams Park that killed 15-year-old Marion Wheaton.
Police say their investigation revealed Wheaton and a 16-year-old friend walked to the area of the 1400 block of North Ohio “to meet a group of teenagers to allegedly fight over an ongoing dispute.”
As Wheaton and his friends walked in the area, a vehicle approached them. A 15-year-old male and Garrett got out of the vehicle and Garrett fired multiple shots, striking Wheaton, police say.
Police say this was not a random incident and during the investigation, officers recovered multiple handguns.
“The investigation is ongoing and the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office,” police say.

Wichita police say a teen shot at McAdams Park, near 13th Street North and Interstate 135, on Wednesday has died from his injuries.
During a morning police briefing on Thursday, Capt. Brent Allred identified the teen as 15-year-old Marion Wheaton.
Allred said around 6 p.m., officers were called to the 1400 block of N. Ohio for the report of a shooting. They arrived to find Wheaton. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
Allred said investigators learned Wheaton and two other boys, ages 15 and 16, were walking to meet with a 15-year-old boy and other individuals for a fight that stemmed from an argument over social media.
