This is Daniel Whyte III with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #316, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.
Today we are reading Hosea 9:16-17.
16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb.
17 My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.

That was Hosea 9:16-17. Now here is the sense of it.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:
Ironically, because of widespread sterility and infant mortality, Ephraim, once a symbol of fruitfulness, would be compared to a withered plant incapable of bearing fruit. Because of her disobedience Israel would be rejected by God. In exile Israel’s people would become wanderers among the nations. “Wanderers” translates the same Hebrew word as “strayed” in 7:13. Again the punishment fit the crime. Those who willfully strayed from the path of covenant loyalty were condemned to wander aimlessly among those outside the covenant. As in 9:15, the language in verse 17 may also allude to the Genesis account. The same verb is used with respect to Cain.
