Department of Corrections Sergeant is Shot Dead in a Road Rage Incident After ‘Minor Accident’ While Teaching Her 17-year-old Son to Drive

A Milwaukee mother-of-two who was teaching her teenage son how to drive was shot and killed in in front of him last week after a road rage incident with another motorist.

Tracey Smith, 46, was riding in the passenger seat with her son at the wheel on Friday evening when their vehicle was struck from behind in what investigators are calling a ‘minor accident’.

Smith, a sergeant with the state’s Department of Corrections, got out of the car to talk to the driver, but after they exchanged words he pulled out a gun and shot her.

The male then fled the scene, as Smith’s distraught son was left to drive her to hospital. She later died from her injuries.

A 35-year-old male, who has not yet been publicly named, was arrested shortly afterwards and remains in custody, the Milwaukee Police Department confirmed.

No details about his arrest or his charges have been released. It was not immediately clear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney.
