LISTEN: 6.9 magnitude earthquake strikes in the Molucca Sea (Second Coming Watch Update #879)

This is Daniel Whyte III with the Second Coming Watch Update. This is update #879. Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, under the Sign category of TURMOIL IN THE MIDDLE EAST — According to World Israel News, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that a Likud government would never uproot any Jewish community in Israel again, even in the framework of a peace agreement. Speaking at an event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Samaria Regional Council, he declared, “Accept my commitment – it doesn’t come with a time limit: We won’t let any community in the Land of Israel be uprooted in the name of a diplomatic plan. We don’t uproot people – we’re done with that nonsense. Israel under my leadership hasn’t and won’t repeat the mistakes of the past.” He also vowed that Israel would always remain in control, saying, “The IDF will continue to control all the ground west of the Jordan [River], including the Jordan Valley.”

Second, today, under the Sign category of EARTHQUAKES IN DIVERS PLACES — According to The Associated Press, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck in the Molucca Sea between North Sulawesi and the Maluku archipelago. Although there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties, a witness said the quake caused panic in the city of Ternate in the Maluku island chain, where people ran to higher ground.

Third, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Israel National News, International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors found evidence of radioactive activity in a warehouse in Tehran that Prime Minister Netanyahu revealed in his UN speech in September. In his speech at the United Nations, Netanyahu claimed that in August 2018, the Iranians removed 15 kilograms of enriched uranium from the atomic reactor, which it did not declare before the International Atomic Energy Agency, and said it was one of a series of steps the Iranians had taken to “cleanse” the site from incriminating evidence. Instead, they claimed that this was a carpet factory and denied that any nuclear activity had taken place. Israel gave the IAEA information on the suspect warehouse and UN inspectors visited the site several times. At their last visit in March, inspectors found traces of radioactive materials, and in recent weeks it has been confirmed. The storage of nuclear materials and equipment at a secret site without reporting to the IAEA is a grave breach of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty signed by Iran.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of THE GOSPEL BEING PREACHED IN THE WORLD — According to God Reports, Algeria, the world’s largest Arab country, once home to the Phoenicians, Romans, Ottomans, and French is now home to a growing number of Christian believers, despite significant persecution. Algeria is at least 95 percent Muslim, and believers face intolerable pressures from family and neighbors militating against the open expression of their faith, along with anti-conversion and blasphemy laws. Yet, as much as Satan attempts to squeeze the church, the faster it grows. “In 2008, there were an estimated 10,000 Christians…by 2015, that number had grown to 380,000. I believe it could now be approaching 500,000,” notes Dr. Rex Rogers, president of SAT-7 USA. “There is now a rapidly growing church in Northern Algeria with 1,000 believers. So many are coming to Christ that every few months they hold a baptism service where 60 to 100 new believers declare their new faith,” Rogers says.

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Israel National News, the European Union tried to prevent the continued trend of member states opening representative offices in Jerusalem but the initiative failed. The EU did not like the decision of some European countries to open economic offices in Jerusalem and senior officials tried to lead to the drafting of an official document that would obligate all EU member states and determine, “Until a final agreement on Jerusalem is reached, the EU and its member states will continue to respect the international agreement on the location of the diplomatic missions.” However, consent of all the EU member states was needed in order to publish the document, and the Czech Republic and Hungary, member states which are considered close friends of Israel, were required to agree to the document and thwarted it.

The prophetic passage of Scripture that we are looking at today is Jeremiah 31:38-40 which reads: “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the city shall be built to the Lord from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner. And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath. And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the Lord; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from Exploring Bible Prophecy from Genesis to Revelation, by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

Jeremiah begins this section with a discussion on the building of the city in verses 38-39. He starts with the words, “Behold, the days are coming,” once again confirming he is talking about the messianic kingdom, when “the city will be rebuilt for the LORD.” Having established this, he then spells out the geography of the rebuilding of Jerusalem and makes four statements. First, he talks about “the Tower of Hananel.” This tower, was in the northeast corner of the city near the Sheep Gate. Second, the rebuilding would go “to the Corner Gate,” which is the northwest corner. Third, in verse 39, Jeremiah says “the measuring line will go out farther straight ahead.” The “measuring line” was a common figure used of rebuilding Jerusalem in the messianic kingdom. And fourth, the rebuilding would extend “to the hill Gareb; then it will turn to Goah.” The Hebrew word Gareb is the same word that is used for “leprosy,” so this was probably a section where lepers were confined. The location of Goah is unknown, but is probably on the west side, since the north sections covered the northeast and south. The point Jeremiah makes is that all these areas that were once considered defiled—even the section where the lepers lived, which was totally unclean—are going to become ceremonially clean in the future rebuilding.

Next, Jeremiah emphasizes the holiness of the city in verse 40. This holiness will include the city itself as well as the surrounding territory, such as “the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes.” The “valley of the dead bodies” is the Valley of Hinnom, mentioned in 2 Kings 23:10, where dead bodies were buried and also where human sacrifices were practiced. The term “ashes” translates a Hebrew word that means “greasy ashes,” referring to the fact of human sacrifices. These were committed on the western side of Jerusalem. Not only will the section where lepers lived become holy to God, but even that section which was once cursed because it had become defiled by being used for human sacrifices will become holy.

Then, Jeremiah adds that the holiness will extend to “all the fields as far as the brook of Kidron.” The fields and this particular brook cover the eastern side of Jerusalem. Both the valley around the west side and the valley around the east side are going to become holy. Furthermore, this holiness will go “to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east.” This is the east side near the temple. By going to the east, this holiness covers all of these sides, and Jeremiah concludes by saying that all of this “shall be holy to the LORD.” The point of this verse is that all of Jerusalem and its surroundings will become holy. Not only will the temple compound area be holy; the whole city will be holy down to the most mundane things. This passage concludes by again emphasizing Jerusalem’s indestructibility: First, “it will not be plucked up”; and second, it will not be “overthrown anymore forever.” Jerusalem, like Israel, will be indestructible when the kingdom is established.

If the Lord tarries His Coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our Second Coming quote for today is from C.S. Lewis. He said, “For this time it will be God without disguise; something so overwhelming that it will strike either irresistible love or irresistible horror into every creature. It will be too late then to choose your side.”

Let’s Pray

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. Here is how.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here is the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
