Vice President Mike Pence gave a speech before the organization Christians United for Israel on Monday as part of their two-day annual summit in Washington, D.C.
During his remarks, Vice President Pence talked about issues related to Israel, foreign policy, anti-Semitism, and how the Trump administration is a friend to the Middle Eastern nation.
Here are four points that Pence made during his speech. They include the administration’s handling of Iran, concerns over rising anti-Semitism, and a response to the claims by some that border detention centers are like concentration camps.
Alliance with Israel
Pence touted President Donald Trump’s efforts to support Israel, declaring that because of the current administration, “our alliance with Israel has never been stronger.”
“President Trump promised to shut down the PLO office in Washington if the Palestinian Authority refused to take steps to stop funding terrorists who murder innocent Israeli civilians with American tax dollars. And when the PLO refused, President Trump shut down their office,” explained Pence.
“The President also promised to confront anti-Semitism on the world stage and see to it that America would no longer allow the United Nations to be a forum for invective against Israel. And, last summer, this President withdrew the United States from the so-called Human Rights Council at the U.N. And two months later, President Trump ended all U.S. contributions to UNRWA.”
Pence also mentioned President Trump’s decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing it as the capital of Israel, and also the administration officially recognizing the Golan Heights as belonging to Israel.
‘Maximum pressure’ against Iran
As tensions continue between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, Pence spoke about how the administration is pursuing a “maximum-pressure campaign to change Iran’s malign behavior and hold the regime accountable for its destructive actions.”
“The Iranian economy is reeling under unprecedented U.S. sanctions,” explained Pence. “Iran must choose between caring for its people and continuing to fund its proxies who spread violence and terrorism throughout the region and breathe out murderous hatred against Israel.”
“We hope for the best, but the United States of America and our military are prepared to protect our interests and protect our personnel and our citizens in the region.”
Pence vowed that the Trump administration would not allow the Islamic Republic to get a nuclear weapon, despite apparent efforts on the part of the regime to do so.
