Ailing Larry King failed to turn up to accept the American Spirit Award Wednesday sparking fears the talk show host’s health has taken a turn for the worse.
King, who had a heart attack in April, was absent from the 13th Annual American Spirit Awards in Los Angeles.
The veteran broadcaster sent long term friend and fellow radio personality Charlie Steiner to accept the coveted gong instead.
And in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com Steiner confirmed that 85-year-old King’s health has been a ‘struggle’ since he suffered a heart scare last month.
The announcer for the LA Dodgers baseball team admitted King’s welfare remains a ‘day to day’ concern.
While publicly his reps have insisted it was a ‘minor matter’, sources have revealed that King has been at a medical facility for over two weeks.
King was initially released from the hospital following his heart attack in April, but then readmitted following further chest pains and it’s understood the star is now at a recovery center in Los Angeles.
A source close to King told DailyMail.com: ‘Because of his physical ailments, visitors are shocked by his appearance, he’s in terrible shape, he’s lost a lot of weight.
‘A tight circle of friends and people that work with him on his shows have been to visit and everyone is extremely concerned.
‘Larry is fighting on though and trying to be upbeat, he’s been watching the Dodgers on TV.’
As the much-loved star battles on, his close friend Steiner is confident he’ll be home very soon.
Steiner said: ‘He’s coming along. I saw him yesterday. I talk to him every day. It’s been a struggle, but the hope and expectation is he’ll be home early next week.
‘Each day he’s getting a little bit better. You know the old saying, ”he’s listed as day-to-day”, but then again aren’t we all?’
