Kelechi Osemele Found Out He Was Traded by Oakland Raiders During Church

Trades are part of the NFL, but it’s often easy to forget that they happen at less-than-ideal times. Just ask former Oakland Raiders guard Kelechi Osemele.

Back on March 9, the Raiders and Jets agreed to a trade in principle that would send Osemele to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2019 fifth-round pick. The Jets received a sixth-round selection in return.

Of course, the agreement happened on Saturday night, but trade wasn’t formally completed until the following Wednesday, which marked the beginning of the new league year. But when did Osemele actually find out that he was being traded?

“So this is going to sound super corny, but my mom will love it,” Osemele said to Adam Lefkoe of Bleacher Report. “I was coming out of church. It’s this church, Howard Thurmon Church of All Souls…It was Sunday, I was going to church, and [Mike] Mayock called me like, yo, sorry we never meant. I was like, ‘actually, we have. I was in there working out, and then we had a long conversation about how I met your son’s friend, but whatever.’ And he was like, ‘I’m so sorry! I’m so embarrassed, but anyways, you’re going to New York.”

While this trade surprised some, it wasn’t that big of a shock to Osemele. As he explained, when he saw the phone call, he was getting ready for church. He knew that a trade was going to happen, but he didn’t want it to ruin his Sunday, so he told Mayock that he would call him back, and then he went in for the service.
