An Australian man who served 12 years in prison on a wrongful conviction was fatally struck in Los Angeles in a hit-and-run crash, officials said.

The deadly crash involving 56-year-old Andrew Mallard occurred Thursday moments after he made a purchase at Consumers Liquor Store in Hollywood, news station KABC reported.

Police said the unidentified suspect fatally struck Mallard as he crossed the street — then continued to flee east on Sunset Boulevard without calling 911.

“The guy went flying up in the sky,” witness Victor Rodriguez told KABC.

Mallard’s death came more than a decade after he was exonerated in the 1994 murder of jewelry shop owner Pamela Lawrence in Perth. He received a $3.25 million ex gratia payment for his wrongful conviction.
