6-Year-Old Boy in Georgia Dies of Heart Attack While Taking Photos With His Baseball Team

A 6-year-old boy from Georgia died of a sudden heart attack while taking baseball team pictures last week, his family said.

Brantley Chandler was getting ready to take a team picture when he collapsed on the field, his mother, Megan Bryson, told NBC News. He was rushed to a children’s hospital in nearby Chattanooga, Tennessee, the network reported, but could not be revived.

The first grader was born with a rare congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Bryson told WCTV.

HLHS is a birth defect in which the left side of the heart forms incorrectly during pregnancy, affecting blood flow, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It occurs in about 960 babies born in the United States each year, the CDC says.

“When he was not playing baseball, Brantley could be found enjoying what the outdoors had to offer,” his obituary read. “He loved Hunting, fishing, spending time with his hunting dog “Boss,” riding four wheelers, and playing in the mud getting his boots dirty!”
