LISTEN: The Scripture and the Sense Podcast: Daniel 4:1-3, with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Daniel Chapter 4:1-3.

1 Nebuchadnezzar (ne-bu-kad-nez-zar) the king, unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.

2 I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me.

3 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

________

That was Daniel Chapter 4:1-3. Now, here is the sense of it from the Bible Knowledge Commentary.

Apparently a number of years transpired between the experience of Daniel’s three friends in chapter 3 and Nebuchadnezzar’s (ne-bu-kad-nez-zar’s) dream and period of insanity in chapter 4. Nebuchadnezzar (ne-bu-kad-nez-zar) reigned for 43 years (605–562 B.C.). His insanity lasted seven years and he returned to the throne for a short time afterward before he died. His last years did not take place until he had time to conclude his extensive building operations. Thus this incident may have taken place about the 35th year of Nebuchadnezzar’s (ne-bu-kad-nez-zar’s) rule, or about 570. This would be some 30 years after the experience of the three men in the fiery furnace, about the 50th year of Daniel’s life.

Daniel recorded an official proclamation made by Nebuchadnezzar (ne-bu-kad-nez-zar) which was circulated throughout his realm. Daniel was led by the Holy Spirit’s inspiration to include this official proclamation. God had shown the king that He is able to deliver and preserve those who trust and obey Him. But God’s revelation of Himself to Nebuchadnezzar (ne-bu-kad-nez-zar) did not conclude there. For God further revealed Himself to the king through the circumstances recorded in this chapter. And in his proclamation to all the people in his empire (peoples, nations, and men of every language), Nebuchadnezzar (ne-bu-kad-nez-zar) declared that through God’s miraculous signs he had learned of His power and that God (the Most High) is sovereign and exerts His will in His … eternal kingdom. Whereas earlier Nebuchadnezzar (ne-bu-kad-nez-zar) believed it was his own power and wisdom that had consolidated the kingdom under his authority, he learned that it is God who rules according to His will and uses those He chooses as His instruments.
