A fifth grader in South Carolina has died from injuries she suffered in a fight at her elementary school earlier this week, authorities have said.
The little girl has been identified as Raniya Wright, of Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, South Carolina.
Colleton County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Shalane Lowes said the girl died at a Charleston hospital Wednesday after the fight at school the Monday prior.
Authorities haven’t detailed how the girl was injured or what the fight was about.
The student who attacked the girl did not use a weapon and is also in fifth grade, according to the incident report, which blacked out the student’s age, sex and name.
The death is a tremendous loss to the school, which has had grief counselors on campus since the fight, Colleton County School District spokesman Sean Gruber said in a statement.
‘Raniya was a wonderful student. She loved to write, spend time with her friends, play basketball and loved being a big sister.
‘She was actively involved in her church as a junior usher,’ Gruber said.
School officials say they are cooperating with deputies in a criminal investigation. No charges have been filed.
Colleton County deputies said they are also investigating the fight.
‘We are devastated by this news, and we want our communities to keep their thoughts and prayers with the student’s family at this time,’ said a statement from the Colleton County School District.
‘CCSD officials continue to focus on providing needed support services to our students, teachers, staff, and community.’
