A devastated mother who fell into a deep depression, after her husband allegedly raped and strangled their six-year-old daughter, has “died of heartbreak”.
Father-of-two, Yaroslav Oleinikov, 28, will stand trial for the rape and murder of six-year-old Veronika, whose body was found with her favourite toy — a rattle — wrapped around her neck last year.
Veronika was found hanging from a fence in the courtyard, near the family’s house in the city of Rostov-on-Don, in southwestern Russia, six months ago.
Russian news outletDonday reported that the girl was killed while her mother, Anna Zubko, 27, was at work.
Anna worked as a cleaner in a local supermarket.
Neighbours told Donday they saw multiple police cars arrive at the house on the morning of the alleged murder.
A forensic examination found the little girl had been sexually assaulted several times before she was eventually strangled to death and hanged.
Oleinikov was charged with rape and murder, and was taken into custody.
The couple were described by neighbours as “reclusive”, who apparently never had visitors to their home, and rarely spoke with those living nearby.
