
According to researchers on the ground in some of the world’s most dangerous countries for Christians, women face twice as many types of persecution as men.
The latest study by Open Doors USA shows that Christian women around the world face harsh and targeted oppression. Vulnerable for their Christianity and their gender, women experience a “double persecution” in 33 countries.
Dr. David Curry, president and CEO of the persecution watchdog group, gives the example of a 15-year-old girl in Nigeria who was captured by Boko Haram. The jihadist militant organization tried to convert her from Christianity to a radical view of Islam. When she refused, her kidnappers sexually assaulted her.
“As a tactic, they then release her back into her village because there’s so much, in that culture, shame associated with being a sexual violence victim,” Curry explains. “They thought they could do more damage to the Christian community by releasing her back to her village. Now she’s got to rebuild … in an environment where she’s considered shameful.”
