A St. Louis officer is dead and another is charged with involuntary manslaughter following chilling Russian Roulette-style gunplay in the shooter’s apartment, police said.
Officer Nathaniel Hendren, 29, is accused of firing a fatal bullet that felled fellow cop Katlyn Alix, 24, while the two were fiddling with a revolver early Thursday, police said.
Details were sketchy as to why the cops were in the apartment and what sparked the deadly blast.
Hendren was on duty, as was his partner, also, 29, who was not identified. The “close friends” were “frequent partners” of Alix while on patrol, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
Alix, who was off duty, went to Hendren’s home in the city’s Carondelet neighborhood, the paper reported.
Hendren and his partner were working a late shift Wednesday and attended roll call at their stationhouse, it said.
Shortly after it’s believed they went to Hendren’s house, which is about two miles from their patrol area, it said.
Hendren removed the bullets from his gun and then put one back in, according to cops. He spun the cylinder, pointed it away and pulled the trigger, but the weapon didn’t fire, the Post-Dispatch reported.
Alix then took the firearm, pointed it at Hendren and pulled the trigger with a similar result. Hendren retook the gun, pulled the trigger, and this time the gun went off, it said.
The bullet struck Alix in the chest, the paper reported.
